On Tuesday, June 16, the Monterey City Council approved proposed budget cuts for July 2020 – June 2021, including a 60.2% reduction in the Library General Fund Budget and 79% reduction in library staff positions. The $2.4 million Reopen and Hiring Fund will be allocated by the City Manager to restore selected Sports Center, Recreation, and Library programs and staff as facilities are able to safely reopen.

Thanks to the many people who sent messages to the Council and called in Tuesday night to express their concerns about the future of library services in Monterey, and thanks to the Council for responding with the Reopen and Hiring Fund. We urge the City to restore the library’s exceptional services and staff as soon as possible.
